THE CHEROKEE CAPSULE — A PATHWAY INTO WISDOM, CRAFT & REMEMBRANCE
By Visium Tahatan Co.
There are collections… and then there are creations that change the maker.
The Cherokee capsule belongs to the second.
I didn’t set out to simply “make new hats.”
I set out to understand — to learn, to listen, to honour, and to create from a place of reverence.
Somewhere along the way, these pieces became teachers.
They shaped me as much as I shaped them.
The Cherokee capsule is a series built from history, resistance, leadership, diplomacy, and the quiet strength of a people who endured more than most could imagine.
But this blog isn’t here to retell their history — that belongs to them.
This is about what it meant to create these hats, what I learned, and how these pieces pulled me deeper into Native wisdom that continues to guide me as a craftsman and as a man.

THE JOURNEY INTO THE CHEROKEE SPIRIT
When I began sketching this range, it was more than colour palettes and crown shapes.
It was a responsibility — to create from respect, not appropriation.
To study, not to assume.
To honour, not to imitate.
Each leader whose name inspired a hat had a life made of struggle, diplomacy, vision, or rebellion.
Their stories carried themes that felt deeply aligned with my own creative path:
-
Courage in the face of force
-
Strategic diplomacy instead of destruction
-
Resistance as an act of identity
-
Crafting solutions rather than accepting fate
-
Walking forward even when the world pushes back
These values slipped into my workshop.
They shaped how I held the felt, how I carved the lines, how I chose each element for each hat.
These hats became more than pieces in a collection — they became lessons in form.
SOME OF THE PIECES — AND WHAT THEY TAUGHT ME
THE ATTAKULLAKULLA — The Visionary Builder
A Granite Silver Belly, Diamond Crown, reclaimed leather, vintage coins, lavender, and a repurposed knife element.
This hat taught me strategy and subtle leadership.
Attakullakulla, “The Little Carpenter,” was known for diplomacy with intention — a reminder that power doesn’t always roar. Sometimes it negotiates, builds, creates bridges.
While shaping this piece, I found myself slowing down, thinking differently.
This hat demanded patience.
Insight.
A builder’s mind.
THE SEQUOYAH — The Architect of Language
Black felt, Arrowhead crown, Native coins, Moroccan leather.
Sequoyah invented an entire written language so his people could preserve their voice.
That kind of creativity — born from necessity, intelligence, and identity — hit me deeply.
This hat reminded me that creation is a responsibility, not a hobby.
Every detail must hold intention.
Every stitch must speak.
THE JOHN ROSS — The Defender
Brown felt, VTC Totem crown, Moroccan leather, Native coins.
John Ross spent his life fighting for the survival of his people through diplomacy, letters, and relentless leadership.
This piece taught me the strength found in carrying a burden with dignity, something I feel often in my craft.
Holding stories… carrying history… creating something worthy of its inspiration.
THE DRAGGING CANOE — The Relentless Rebel
Light brown felt, diamond crown, reclaimed leather, repurposed knife element, ferro rod & fire tools.
Dragging Canoe resisted when others accepted fate.
He saw what others refused to see.
This hat taught me to carve my own current, to trust my path even when it defies expectation.
It’s one of the most rugged pieces in the range — built for the ones who refuse to fold.
CRAFTING WITH RESPECT — WHAT THIS RANGE HAS MEANT TO ME
Creating this range wasn’t just about hats.
It was about understanding a culture far deeper than imagery or symbolism.
It required humility — to know that I am an observer, a student, a guest.
I spent hours reading, watching, listening to the stories and perspectives of Native voices so I could approach this work with integrity.
Not to take — but to honour.
The teachings that came through this process continue to shape my craft:
1. Walk with intention.
Every cut, every crease, every element must mean something.
2. Respect the materials.
Nothing wasted. Everything repurposed.
Creation is stewardship.
3. Imperfection holds beauty.
Cherokee philosophy and Wabi Sabi meet here — nothing is meant to be flawless.
Truth lives in texture, scars, history.
4. Craft is spiritual.
A hat isn’t just a hat.
It’s a companion, a protector, a piece of identity.
5. The past guides the hands.
History, when honoured, leads to better craftsmanship and deeper storytelling.
BEYOND THE HATS — A DEEPER PATHWAY
Working on the Cherokee Range pulled me closer to Indigenous wisdom, especially around:
-
Stewardship of land
-
The sacredness of craft
-
The importance of presence
-
Generational resilience
-
Connection to lineage
-
Community and responsibility
These lessons go far beyond felt and flame.
They’ve shifted how I walk, create, and build this company.
They’ve taught me that every collection should not only express style — it should express values.
A RANGE BUILT WITH RESPECT, LOVE & STORY
The Cherokee Range is a tribute — not a replica.
It’s my way of honouring the leaders whose stories reshaped my own thinking, while staying grounded in craftsmanship, sustainability, and purpose.
Every hat in this collection is:
-
One-of-one
-
Handmade
-
Reclaimed where possible
-
Built to last
-
Crafted with meaning
-
Shaped by story
This range is for those who want more than a hat —
they want a statement of identity, a piece that carries weight, history, energy, and soul.
And for me…
it has been a journey of respect, humility, and inspiration that will stay with me in every collection to come.
